Dear Friends

Thank you very much for your warm and encourag mails and telephone calls.
One week has passed after the March 11 th. Touhoku- Kanto mega earthquake hit Japan. Almost every day after  that  day  frequent aftershocks of  M4
to M6 degree are being attacking us. The epicenter of Magnitude 9.0 earth quake took place at the Touhoku(East -North) off coast plate and induced 3 other plates  in the pacific ocean. The bottom of the sea for 500kM in length and 200 KM in width moved and caused  the catastrophic TUNAMI.
This natural disaster which may happen once for 1,000 years  in our recorded history  gave us triple damages, earthquake ,tunami and radiation.
Until now more than 2o,000 people were dead or missing and 450,000 became homeless .
I t was only fortunate SCI memberes and their family members were safe. Our project sites and volunteers  are all well. Today Toyoda and members of the survey  team of architectures for the cyclone shelter project  departed to Bangladesh as scheduled.
The accident of Fukushima Daiiti(No.1)nuclear plant  gave us another  agony  besides natural disaster.    Unimaginable severe quake and tunami destroyed electric system of the power plant and made  its cooling system unable to operate. The heat of the  reactors and the pool of  spent fuel rods  caused  hydrogen explosion and destroyed a part of the reactor buildings. Highly toxic radiation was released into the air. People within 30 km from the plant was asked to evacuate or staying at home. The desperate effort  to cool down the system  is being continued day and night. If this work is not successful there will be the worst case  "melt down" like Chelnovile.
I am living at 150 km south from the plant (Ibaraki Pref.) and radiation level  around here  is  higher than the normal, although not harmful for health at this moment . Tokyo and other area is normal. We must keep vigilant for evacuation to avoid exposure to fallout in the worst case.
Dreadful Tunami washed away every thing and the half of mainland from Tokyo to the northern extremity is crippled. This is the national crisis we experienced after the end of the second world war.  At this emergent stage, only army, police , fire service and professional organizations with self- sufficiency can work at the hard -hit  still trembling areas. SCI  as an organization will be able to work at the long and hard stage of rehabilitation.
Since this disaster took place we have received many mails of condolences and words of sympathy , telephone call etc. from many of you. Some offered us  their voluntary works . Global rescue teams arrived to save victimes, more than 140 countries offered Japan their helping hands.  We are  deeply
moved  and immensely encouraged by the sense  of solidarity of human beings.  It may take  years to come until suffered people restore peaceful life
and reconstruct  what was lost. I think we Japanes are now facing ordeal and being tested . We never give up ,hope .
Thank you again for your friend ship.
Amities,
Toyohisa Monden for SCI Japan

world Dear all SCI friends & fans

Hello! We are happy to send you Asian Voice again! We wanted to publish it by the end of 2010, but somehow it becomes a bit late. We are sorry about this. But still we are sure that you will see many interesting reports from SCI activists in Asia-Pacific-Mauritius region, and you will find what they are doing there!

We will see you again soon with Asia Voice Spring & Summer volume!

We welcome any feedbacks from you.

Thank you for your reading!

Peace Messenger online course (June and November 2010)

Egy remek online kurzusra szeretnénk felhívni a figyelmeteket!

A Peace Messenger-ek munkájába lehet bepillantást nyerni a netes tréning során, miután akár az Útilapu Peace Messenger munkacsoportjába is csatlakozhattok.

A bővebb infó a csatolmányban.

1- Aims of this course

The aim of this course was to introduce participants to peace education (theoretical approaches as well as practical tools) and to the Peace Messengers programme.

The aim was also to experiment and see to which extent an online course could be an alternative to international seminars, and in general how it works and to draw lessons from it.

2- Structure of the course

Both sessions had the same content:

-         Week 0: Getting to know each others

-         Week 1: What is peace for me: an introduction to the concepts of peace and peace education

-         Week 2: Peace in action in SCI: explaining what SCI is doing as a peace organisation (focus on the workcamp as a peace education tool, but also other programmes such as No More War)

-         Week 3: Roles and tasks of Peace Messengers

We improved the methodology between Session 1 and 2, making it more interactive. In Session 2, participants received assignments at the beginning of the week, one individual and one pair, and were assigned a partner for the pair assignment. They had to post their contributions on the forum, or send it back to the facilitators; and they were given the opportunity to take part to skype discussions on the week’s theme. In the last week, they were given extra time to design in group a Peace Messengers session.
